    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

City of Kingston Hosts Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals Concert Event

One-Day Performance Featuring David Gonzalez & Frederick Chiu

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble and the City of Kingston’s Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs are pleased to announce a special presentation of Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals at Old Dutch Church on Saturday, April 8, 2023, from 3:00-4:00pm. The program, featuring award-winning storyteller David Gonzalez and classical piano virtuoso Frederick Chiu, is free and open to the public.

Peter and the Wolf, a lyrical symphonic fairy tale for children composed by Sergei Prokofiev, will be narrated by David Gonzalez while Frederick Chiu accompanies on the piano. Followed by a performance of composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, a musical suite of fourteen movements, each for various animals, including The Tortoise, The Swan, and Wild Horses.

“Our Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs has a wonderful line-up of events this year that will be free, open to the public, and family friendly. This is the first of many great events to come in 2023, and I encourage Kingston families to come and enjoy this special performance,” said Mayor Noble. “I also want to thank the Old Dutch Church for opening their space to the community for this program.”

“We are so excited to present this afternoon of family fun, with a dazzling piano performance by Frederick Chiu, with funky family-friendly poetry by David Gonzalez that gives this humorous musical suite a new twist,” said Kitt Potter, City of Kingston’s Director of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

David Gonzalez is of Cuban/Puerto Rican heritage and is an unusual combination of musician, composer, storyteller, producer, poet, actor, showman and impresario. A recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Gonzalez holds a doctorate in Music Therapy from NYU and has performed for thousands of schools throughout the US during his long and joyous career. www.davidgonzalez.com

Frederick Chiu plays major venues on five continents: Lincoln Center in New York, Le Châtelet in Paris, the Mozarteum in Buenos Aires, and extensive tours in smaller and unusual venues. Frederic Chiu recorded the most extensive complete piano works of Prokofiev, and his personal relationship with the Prokofiev family makes him a world-recognized advocate of the composer. With his wife, Jeanine Esposito, he co-created the arts non-profit, Beechwood Arts & Innovation to explore collaboration across art genres and the integration of arts and technology to foster community. Frederic teaches at both Carnegie Mellon University and The Hartt School. www.fredericchiu.com
