Welcome to the City of Kingston, NY

Kingston, dating to the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, is a vibrant city with rich history and architecture, was the state's first capital, and a thriving arts community. City Hall is in the heart of the community at 420 Broadway, and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except July & August (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).  Come tour our historic City, with restaurants that are among the region's finest, and local shopping that promises unique finds.

    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

    Kingston, NY

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    Kingston, NY

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

7/17/2024 - Pop-up Pickleball Court in Midtown Kingston

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    July 17, 2024

Pop-up Pickleball Court in Midtown Kingston

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that, courtesy of the generosity and community spirit of local store owners at Rewind Kingston, a pop-up pickleball court has been created on Field Court in Midtown Kingston.

In a collaboration with the City of Kingston and Kingston Parks & Recreation, Rewind Kingston has painted a pickleball court on Field Court, the dead-end street across from UPAC. The Flood family, owners of Rewind Kingston, are planning to host the first free pop-up pickleball lesson on Wednesday, July 17 and will offer lessons to high school-age youth and young adults – although all ages are welcome—taught by volunteer Peter Van Loan of PVL Academy.

“I am thrilled to see this community effort coming together for a free, fun activity in Midtown Kingston, all for a great cause,” said Mayor Noble. “The Flood family have created a true community space and have generously volunteered their time and energy to support this community. I applaud them for this wonderful endeavor!”

“Rewind Kingston is dedicated to raising awareness to the mental health crises in our youth and we donate 10 percent of all sales to local mental health programs in memory of our daughter/sister Cassidy, who lost her battle in 2020,” said Joanne Flood. “Her uncle Peter introduced her to pickleball and she loved it. I started playing with my daughters Karlie and Sydney and it has significantly improved our mental health. We believe pickleball can make a positive impact in our youth, and we already have kids that are excited to learn. In addition to helping mental health, pickleball helps create social dynamics and connect generations. And it’s just so much fun!”

Rewind Kingston will host Wellness Wednesdays, with a free collage and journaling workshop by Karlie Flood in collaboration with United We Om from 3:00-5:00pm on July 17, July 31, and August 21. Free community pickleball lessons from 6:00-8:00pm on July 17, July 24, and July 31. Games will be held on August 21, August 28, and September 4, 2024.

Paddles will be available for beginners during Wednesday night lessons. If community members would like to donate paddles or other pickleball supplies, please contact Joanne Flood at Rewind Kingston.

The organizers are planning a tournament at the end of the summer to raise money for their second annual Heart of Midtown: Go All In For Mental Health event, which will be held on September 7, 2024. The street festival is a collaboration with nonprofit United We Om and neighboring businesses including UPAC and Westkill Supply. The event will feature mental health nonprofits tabling with resources, art and wellness workshops, live music, free zines, pickleball, and a dunking booth.

Kingston Parks & Recreation has a pickleball court at Loughran Park, and last winter started an indoor pickleball program at Rondout Neighborhood Center. More information on Kingston Parks & Recreation programs at https://www.kingston-ny.gov/parksandrecreation.
