    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    Kingston, NY

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    September 5, 2024

Open Call for Artwork Submissions for FREEDOM

    City Hall Exhibition

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble and the Department of Arts & Cultural Affairs are pleased to announce that the City of Kingston will be accepting artwork submissions for an exhibition at City Hall entitled, FREEDOM.

The concept of the exhibition was developed as a part of the major installation of sculptor Trina Greene’s Sojourner Truth: First Step to Freedom statue, which will be on display in City Hall from September 28, 2024 through August 2025. For the FREEDOM exhibition, artists are invited to submit work that celebrates and visually represents Sojourner Truth’s legacy as a champion for freedom, justice, and women’s rights.

“It is such an honor to host Sojourner Truth: First Step to Freedom here in City Hall and for the public to be able to view this remarkable piece of art, which captures a pivotal time in our history,” said Mayor Noble. “We know that art can be healing, inspiring, and educational, and hope that the community will bring all of this and more to their own artwork to be exhibited. I look forward to seeing the creativity and artistry of our community on display in City Hall alongside the statue.”

“We look forward to getting submissions from individual artists, youth organizations, local galleries, and colleges alike,” said Kitt Potter, Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs. “May this exhibition be reflective of one world, one voice as we together celebrate Sojourner’s great legacy.”

Selected works will be displayed in the ground floor gallery space at City Hall from December 2024 to August 2025. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Artists are invited to submit an artwork in response to the theme FREEDOM via the online application or in person/by mail to the Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs, 420 Broadway, Kingston, NY, 12401 by October 25, 2024 at 4:30pm.

Submissions should include the following to be considered:

    • Image of the work
    • A short bio and contact information
    • A brief description of the work and how the work reflects the theme FREEDOM

Works will be selected by a review panel comprised of members of the Kingston Arts Commission and the Kingston arts community. Additional information on submission requirements is available at https://www.kingston-ny.gov/exhibitions.
