    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    Kingston, NY

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

10/31/2024 - Kingston Business Park Housing Study Public Meeting on November 13

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    October 31, 2024

Kingston Business Park Housing Study Public Meeting to be Held on November 13 at City Hall

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that the City of Kingston will host a public meeting for the Kingston Business Park Housing Study, which will determine the potential for housing and/or mixed-used development at the Kingston Business Park.

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 6:00-7:00pm at City Hall and via Zoom. Consultants from Buro Happold will review details about the site and possible development approaches, with time allowed for discussion and Q&A.

“To combat our housing shortage here in Kingston, we are exploring areas where we might be able to increase our housing stock, and are hopeful that the Kingston Business Park could be an ideal site,” said Mayor Noble. “We look forward to hearing from the community at this public meeting and discussing the topographical challenges at the Kingston Business Park site. We are looking to Buro Happold, with the community’s input, to create a forward-thinking approach.”

With the Kingston Business Park study, the City of Kingston and the Kingston Local Development Corporation (KLDC) are seeking to understand the feasibility of adding housing at the 107-acre property located at 370-384 Delaware Avenue currently owned by the KLDC. Buro Happold will perform initial site analysis, explore possible types of residential and/or mixed-used development possible under the City’s form-based zoning code, and make recommendations for new development. Buro Happold is an international, integrated consultancy of engineers, designers and advisers. The firm was chosen to lead this project through a competitive Request for Proposals process.

First established in 1998, the Business Park was originally designed to accommodate four to five light manufacturing facilities totaling 300,000-500,000 square feet, utilizing approximately 40-50 acres for commercial development. Currently, there are two active commercial tenants: Howmet Aerospace and Community Manufacturing Solutions.
