Statement from Mayor Noble Regarding the Council’s Approval to Remove the Pike Plan Canopies:
I want to thank the Common Council for their support voting in favor of removing the Pike Plan canopies.
The Pike Plan, as it partially stands today, was not well constructed and has come to the end of its useful life. With this approval, we will soon be going out to bid to begin the removal work. We will also be meeting with the adjoining property owners and tenants in the coming weeks to discuss the next steps, the removal process, and façade repairs. We expect demolition to occur in April.
As a City, we have been working toward reversing the harms of Urban Renewal, and I believe restoring our beautiful historic buildings will be a great step in the right direction, and returning the facades to their original grandeur will bolster the economic vitality of Uptown Kingston.
During this process, we have been met with a steady stream of lawsuits that have threatened our efforts to improve our City and protect our residents. In repeatedly suing the City of Kingston, William Gottlieb Real Estate has attempted to drain the City of funds and resources, but we will continue to stand against this powerful corporate interest and do what is necessary to protect Kingston residents.
