Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Kingston Launches New Platform to Streamline Planning Review

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that the City of Kingston has launched a new platform to modernize the application process for multiple municipal review boards, including the Planning Board, Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Tree Commission.

The City of Kingston has partnered with Kingston-based GovTech innovator MuniCollab to modernize the review process with a new online platform that will enhance the efficiency of the City’s review boards.

“This transition to an online system represents our commitment to making Kingston’s development more accessible, efficient, and transparent,” said Mayor Noble. “By implementing MuniCollab’s platform, we’re streamlining operations for both our staff and residents, while maintaining the thorough review procedures that help shape our City’s future.”

The new system will digitize the entire land-use review process, from initial application submission through final decision-making, while providing transparency and record-keeping. The platform has been specifically created to align with Kingston’s updated zoning code. The Planning Board will begin using the new portal to accept applications starting March 3, 2025, with additional boards launching in the following weeks.

Benefits of the new online platform for the Kingston community include:

    • Streamlined digital application for Planning Board, Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission, and Tree Commission reviews
    • Enhanced collaboration between applicants, City officials, and the public
    • Improved accessibility to application materials and review documents
    • Greater transparency throughout the review
    • Simplified project tracking and management for multiple boards and commissions

“The implementation of this platform will significantly improve our ability to review applications while making the entire process more accessible to the public,” said Suzanne Cahill, Planning Director. “Applicants will now have a clear digital pathway through our various boards, while residents will have better access to information about projects that shape our community.”

Planning Board Chair Wayne Platte said, “The new planning review software is a welcomed addition to how we conduct business. The process is simple to navigate for applicants and board members alike. The new site will certainly help streamline the submission process for applicants, allow Planning Board members to stay on top of projects between meetings, and give the public easy access to view current projects.”

The adoption of MuniCollab’s software builds upon Kingston's success in modernizing its development process, including the recent implementation of form-based zoning code and other initiatives that have helped the City achieve over 90% of the goals set forth in the Kingston 2025 Comprehensive Plan.
