    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

11/5/2025 - City of Kingston Opens Short-Term Rental Applications for Four Full-Time Permits

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    November 5, 2025

City of Kingston Opens Short-Term Rental Applications for Four Full-Time Permits

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble and the Office of Housing Initiatives announce that there are currently four vacancies for short-term rental full permits, and the online registration for the available permits will be open on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

For one day, on December 3, 2025, the City’s short-term rental registration portal will be open for the available full permits, which had previously been at capacity and closed.

Under the City’s new form-based zoning code, the number of short-term rental full permits is limited to 1% of the City’s total housing units, which is currently 106 permits.

“We are proud of how the City has taken stock of, limited, and systemized the registration for our short-term rentals in Kingston,” said Mayor Noble. “Both our Housing Director and the Building Department have done an excellent job managing the short-term rental inventory. We have now dipped below the maximum threshold and are offering permits to four additional properties to come online as full time rentals.”

Director of Housing Initiatives Bartek Starodaj said, “Due to non-renewals, we’ve now fallen below the cap for the number of full short-term rental permits allowed in the City of Kingston. This is an opportunity for anyone seeking a full permit to obtain one or to be placed on a waitlist.”

To apply for an STR-full permit, interested property owners must register for an account on the City’s registration portal. Once registered, contact the Office of Housing Initiatives to obtain an account code and account number, and express interest in applying for a full permit to be assigned the correct application.

Property owners may then register for the full permit any time on December 3, 2025. A complete registration is one in which a property owner has completed an application, uploaded proof of ownership, and paid the annual registration fee.

If there are more registrations than applications available, the City will randomly select registrants until the full permit availability has been filled. Registrants not successful in receiving the full permit will be placed on a waitlist to receive permits as spots become available.

Contact Office of Housing Initiatives at [email protected] with questions.
