    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    Kingston, NY

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

1/22/2026 - Mayor Noble Announces New Park Bench & Tree Dedication Policy

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    January 22, 2026

Mayor Noble Announces New Park Bench & Tree Dedication Policy

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that the City of Kingston has a new policy for bench and tree dedications in public parks and common areas.

Mayor Noble said, “We are pleased to introduce this new program that allows us to make beautifications to our green spaces while also taking a moment to honor and remember those who have left a lasting mark in our community.”

The City of Kingston is now accepting donations for new or existing park benches, and whether the bench is existing or new, a donor recognition plaque will be installed on the bench.

The City of Kingston has also created a park tree donation program, which allows for the commemoration of a special occasion, person, or group with a tree planted in a Kingston park. A donor recognition plaque will be installed at the base of the tree, and the tree will receive regular care and maintenance.

Director of Parks and Recreation Lynsey Timbrouck said, “Many residents have expressed an interest in donating a bench in honor of a loved one or a dedicated member of the community, so our department is excited to finally launch this new initiative!”

City of Kingston Urban Forester Brent Knepper said, “The park tree donation program is a great way to help beautify your favorite park while commemorating a special occasion, person, or group at the same time. With this program, community members can have trees added to a park of their choice along with a donor plaque. Already have a favorite tree in a park that you enjoy visiting? You can donate to provide support and care for that tree and have a plaque added as well.”

For the tree plantings, there will be two deadlines to apply per year: January 1 for summer planting and May 1 for fall planting. The donation period for both trees and benches is 10 years. Previous donors will have first right or refusal for renewal after the initial 10-year period. There is no deadline for the bench application, but installation will be determined by weather feasibility.

The costs for participating in the program are: new tree planting and dedication: $1,000, existing tree dedication: $500. A new park bench with dedication plaque: $2,000, plaque on an existing bench: $500.
